Why Do Some Orlando Health Physicians Not Have A Patient Experience Rating

Meet Dr. Vipul Patel – Robotic Prostatectomy | Global Robotics Institute | AdventHealth

The Patient Satisfaction Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions, shown above, from our nationally-recognized Press-Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question.Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score. The comments are submitted by patients and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not necessarily reflect the views of Orlando Health.Ratings may not be present for certain physicians of Orlando Health Physician Group and Orlando Health Physician Associates because:

  • The physician has not yet met the minimum number of 30 patient satisfaction surveys to be eligible for display.
  • They may be a researcher or type of provider that does not see patients.
  • They may practice in a specialty or office that has not yet implemented the specified surveys used for these ratings.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Dr. Vipul Patel, the Medical Director of Urologic Oncology at AdventHealth Cancer Institute, visited GOOD DAY ORLANDO on Monday.

Dr. Patel said beginning at age 50, men should have a yearly test for prostate cancer, and discuss their risk with their primary care physician or urologist. Men who are at higher risk should begin testing at age 40. African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer are considered higher risk and should consider testing earlier. Dr. Patel also shared that diet can play a significant role in many cancers, and men who consume a lot of red meats, fatty foods and dairy can increase their risk. A diet with a larger amount of fruits and vegetables is recommended to potentially reduce risk.

Most cancers are first found during screening with a prostate-specific antigen blood test PSA or a digital rectal exam .

Surgical procedures to remove the diseased prostate are usually necessary. Surgical procedures are not always necessary. If the disease is caused by bacterial infections, a doctor can treat the symptoms using alpha-blockers or surgery. Physical therapy, relaxation exercises, and warm baths are all recommended. A physician may also prescribe antibiotics to cure the infection. A bacterial infection can also cause a recurrence of the condition.

An enlarged prostate can be uncomfortable for both men and women. Some of the symptoms of an enlarged male reproductive organ include a weakened urine stream, urgent need to urinate, and urinary tract infections. BPH can also cause damage to the kidneys. A sudden inability to urinate can be life-threatening, as it can lead to bladder and kidney damage. Unfortunately, most men with enlarged prostrates put up with the symptoms for years before they seek treatment. However, many of the men with symptoms finally decide to go to a doctor for proper gynecological evaluation and to begin enlarged prostatic therapy.

At age 42, Dr. Jeffrey A. Cadeddu felt like a dinosaur in urologic surgery. He was trained to take out cancerous prostates the traditional laparoscopic way: making small incisions in the abdomen and inserting tools with his own hands to slice out the organ.

But now, patient after patient was walking away. They did not want that kind of surgery. They wanted surgery by a robot, controlled by a physician not necessarily even in the operating room, face buried in a console, working the robots arms with remote controls.

Patients interview you, said Dr. Cadeddu, a urologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. They say: Do you use the robot? O.K., well, thank you. And they leave.

On one level, robot-assisted surgery makes sense. A robots slender arms can reach places human hands cannot, and robot-assisted surgery is spreading to other areas of medicine.

But robot-assisted prostate surgery costs more about $1,500 to $2,000 more per patient. And it is not clear whether its outcomes are better, worse or the same.

Robot-assisted prostate surgery has grown at a nearly unprecedented rate.

Dr. Sean R. Tunis, director of the Center for Medical Technology Policy, a nonprofit organization that evaluates medical technology, said few other procedures had made such rapid inroads in medicine.

What You Need To Know About The Prostate Dr Patel Prostate Surgery Orlando

A enlarged prostate can also cause blockages in the urethra. A blocked urethra can also damage the kidneys. A patient suffering from an enlargement of the prostate may have pain in his lower abdomen and genitals. If pain is present, a digital rectal examination will reveal hard areas. A doctor may prescribe surgery or perform an endoscopic procedure. If the enlarged prostate is not completely removed, it will shrink.

While the size of an enlarged prostate will influence the extent of urinary symptoms, men may experience a range of urinary symptoms. Some men have minimal or no symptoms at all. Some men will have a very enlarged prostate, whereas others will have a mild enlargement. Generally, the symptoms can stabilize over time. Some men may have an enlarged prostate but not notice it. If they have an enlarged colon, their physician can perform a TURP procedure.

Dr Vipul Patel Is A Worldwide Leader In Performing Robotic Surgeries For Prostate Cancer

    Men

In February of this year, Florida Hospitals Dr. Vipul Patel crossed the 10,000 mark in the number of robotic-assisted prostate cancer surgeries hes performed since 2012. Hes now at 10,500 procedures, he says, a milestone hes clearly proud of and one establishing him as a world leader in robotic treatments for this cancer.

Patels office on the Celebration campus is full of family photos, numerous awards and gifts from grateful patients, such as a foot-high, bronze statue of Don Quixote from Mexico adorning one of his office tables. Also prominently displayed: a photo of basketball great Oscar Robertson, the Big O, a prostate cancer survivor who traveled to Patel for treatment shortly after diagnosis and another photo of Patel in front of Londons Big Ben with Dr. Patrick Walsh, a pioneering figure in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore.

On a recent day, staff at the nearby Nicholson Center was preparing for a training session with 600 to 900 surgeons from around the world, but not just for robotics. The ultra modern glass building, housing over 54,000 square feet of space, is the training site for all types of surgeriesopen surgery, robotics and laparoscopy, a forerunner to the robotics revolution.

Over 161,000 cases of prostate cancer will be newly diagnosed this year in the United States, while 26,730 men are expected to die of their disease, according to the American Cancer Society.

Expert’s Success Is Model For Prostate

In the field of robotic prostate-cancer treatment, Florida Hospital surgeon Vipul Patel is a rock star.

Patel, who has performed the most robotic surgeries in the world, is an internationally recognized expert in a type of surgical procedure less invasive than traditional prostatectomies. Men who undergo the surgery are more likely to maintain their bladder control and sexual function.

Patel’s patients are a very appreciative bunch.

Dunedin businessman Ralph Jordan is president of Patel’s fan club. He was the doctor’s first patient at Celebration Health, part of the Florida Hospital system. Jordan was so pleased with Patel’s surgical skill and bedside manner that he started a Web site, vipfriendsonline.com. The site is filled with glowing testimonials from Jordan and other patients.

“It seems like when someone literally helps cure you of cancer, you feel this need to give back,” said Jordan, 68.

Patel is largely the reason Florida Hospital’s Cancer Center is one of five programs recently selected to participate in the Association of Community Cancer Centers’ prostate-cancer best-practices project. Florida Hospital, where Patel is medical director of the Global Robotic Institute, will learn and share information about model prostate-cancer programs across the country.

“The need for education and support for prostate care is clearly unmet in many communities,” said the association’s executive director, Christian Downs.
