Detecting and screening for prostate cancer using multiparametric MRI has the potential to impact two areas, Scholz explains. First, studies have shown that in some cases imaging can be effectively substituted for a routine biopsy. Secondly, Scholz notes, this approach could be used to monitor patients on active surveillance.
The potential to utilize imaging to reduce the number of biopsies is exciting, Scholz believes, particularly since biopsies may lead to serious infections and overdiagnosis in early stage prostate cancer.

When I went on active surveillance in December 2010, I felt I was on my own.
I heard the word CANCER, and thats pretty much all I heard. No support. No direction other than a slew of treatment choicesnot including AS.
There were no support groups in the U.S. then for men on Active Surveillance for low-risk prostate cancer. I made a call for AS-only support groups in my column A Patients Journey in MedPageToday in 2017. And it would a couple of more years until I helped start Active Surveillance Patients International and then the AS weekly virtual support group on the AnCan platform.
